Putting America First—Always

As of February 24, 2025, President Donald Trump's administration has undertaken several initiatives under the "America First" agenda, aiming to prioritize U.S. interests in various sectors. This article provides an overview of the key actions implemented to date.

1. Economic Policies

Tax Reforms and Budget Adjustments: The administration has proposed $4.5 trillion in tax cuts coupled with $2 trillion in spending reductions. These measures are designed to stimulate economic growth while addressing the national debt. However, the proposed spending cuts have raised concerns about potential impacts on services such as food assistance, education grants, and Medicaid.

America First Investment Policy: On February 21, 2025, President Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum introducing the "America First Investment Policy." This policy encourages foreign investments from allied nations while imposing stricter regulations on investments from countries deemed adversarial, notably China. The policy aims to prevent foreign entities from acquiring critical American businesses and assets that are vital to national security.

2. Government Restructuring

Federal Workforce Reduction: In an effort to streamline government operations, the administration has implemented federal hiring and grant freezes, along with significant budget cuts. These actions align with the administration's goal to reduce the size of the federal government and reallocate resources more efficiently.

Accountability Measures: Elon Musk, appointed to oversee government efficiency, issued a directive requiring federal employees to justify their roles within 48 hours. This move aims to identify and retain essential personnel while reducing bureaucratic redundancy. The directive has led to varied responses across agencies, with some advising compliance and others urging employees to disregard the ultimatum.

3. Trade and Foreign Relations

America First Trade Policy: An executive order issued on January 20, 2025, outlines the administration's commitment to prioritizing American interests in international trade. The policy mandates a comprehensive review of existing trade agreements, focusing on trade deficits and unfair practices, with recommendations expected by April 1, 2025.

Withdrawal from International Climate Agreements: Executive Order 14162, titled "Putting America First In International Environmental Agreements," was signed on January 20, 2025. This order directed the immediate withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement and other international climate commitments, emphasizing a focus on domestic energy policies and economic interests.

4. Immigration and Border Security

Enhanced Border Protection Measures: The administration has taken decisive actions to secure the U.S. border and protect American communities. This includes ending previous catch-and-release policies, reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" program, constructing additional border barriers, terminating asylum for illegal border crossers, cracking down on sanctuary cities, and enhancing vetting and screening processes for immigrants.

5. Small Business Support

Regulatory Reforms: To foster a more conducive environment for small businesses, the administration is reviewing and potentially rolling back regulations deemed burdensome. The goal is to reduce compliance costs and administrative hurdles, enabling small enterprises to thrive and contribute to the economy.

Access to Capital: Initiatives are underway to improve small businesses' access to financing. This includes collaborating with financial institutions to offer favorable loan terms and exploring tax incentives that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.

6. National Security and Defense

Strengthening Military Capabilities: The administration has prioritized bolstering the U.S. military by increasing defense spending and investing in advanced technologies. These efforts aim to ensure that the armed forces are well-equipped to address emerging global threats and maintain national security.

Revised Foreign Aid Policies: Significant reductions in foreign aid budgets have been proposed, with a focus on reallocating resources to domestic priorities. This shift reflects the administration's stance that U.S. funds should primarily benefit American citizens.

7. Energy Independence

Promoting Domestic Energy Production: Policies have been implemented to encourage the exploration and utilization of domestic energy resources. By reducing reliance on foreign energy imports, the administration aims to achieve energy independence and stimulate economic growth within the energy sector.

Revising Environmental Regulations: In conjunction with withdrawing from international climate agreements, the administration is reassessing environmental regulations to balance ecological concerns with economic development. This includes streamlining approval processes for energy projects and reducing regulatory burdens on energy producers.

Conclusion

The Trump administration's "America First" agenda encompasses a wide range of policies designed to prioritize U.S. interests across economic, governmental, and international spheres. While supporters argue that these measures strengthen national sovereignty and economic prosperity, critics express concern over potential global isolation and domestic challenges arising from such policies. As these initiatives continue to unfold, their long-term impact on the United States' position both domestically and internationally will become more evident.
